Phi Alpha Honor Society


What is it?

Phi Alpha is a national Honor Society for social work students that extends membership to those who have attained excellence in their social work and general courses, and for those who demonstrate a passion for promoting social and economic justice and peace internationally.

Purposes

The purposes of Phi Alpha Honor Society are to provide a closer bond among students of social work and to promote humanitarian goals and ideal. Phi Alpha fosters high standards of education for social workers and invites into membership, those who have attained excellence in scholarship and achievement in social work.

Membership into Phi Alpha is recognized by employers and graduate schools and is recognized by the Council on Social Work Education.

Requirements for Induction:

1. Minimum overall cumulative G.P.A. of 3.5 in all social work classes.

2. Minimum overall cumulative G.P.A of 3.0 in all classes.

3. Completion and submission of application, 1-page project proposal, and $30 fee (make checks out to BYUH Department of Social Work).

4. Completion of approved project totaling 10 hours. Project must be approved by the Phi Alpha Advisor, Bro. Andre Hippolite. Upon completion of your project, you must give a culminating presentation on your project in the SOCW 362 class (schedule a time with Bro. Hippolite).

Please submit all application materials to the Department Secretary in Office #205 for pre-screening.

DEADLINES:

Winter 2016-17 applicants: Friday, December 16th, 2016

Spring 2017 applicants: Friday, April 21st, 2017

Fall 2017 applicants: Friday, September 15th, 2017

Service Project Guidelines and Ideals:

Be creative! Find something you're passionate about; woman's issues, minority rights, policy campaigning/advocacy, art project (a mural), collection of poetry by survivors of violence/abuse, a candlelight vigil highlighting area/issue of interest, organization of a teen group, special forums, etc.
